Sugar Made Me Sick
You might think I’ve always been the super healthy/fit guy who has it all together.
But nope. That’s far from the truth.
Here’s what really happened…
I had pneumonia.
I had a heart attack (yep, five stents in my heart).
I got the flu a bunch of times.
Every winter, from October to April, I had a cold.
Even got a summer cough a few times… no clue how.
I was always tired, especially after eating. Sometimes I’d fall asleep right after lunch - like deep sleep.
I had adult acne (look at the pic above, I was around 22 - I know I look like a pepperoni pizza 🍕)
Itchy skin patches that woke me up at night.
Had to pee 2 times every night.
And worst of all, I was just stressed out about my health.
If we’re being honest, you’re probably healthier than I was.
But here’s what I found out:
Sugar was the problem.
Like, 99% of my health issues were linked to sugar.
Now, I know there’s a ton of info out there.
Should we eat meat? Go vegan? Eat protein every 2 hours? Are raw veggies bad for digestion?
Honestly, I don’t know what’s true anymore. I just do what feels right for my body.
But when it comes to sugar…
I know 1,000,000% that it messes me up.
I don’t need a study to prove it. I lived it.
Once I learned how to deal with sugar, everything changed.
✅ I haven’t been sick in forever (no coughs, no colds).
✅ My skin cleared up. Its not perfect, but its better (I basically traded my hair for clearer skin - I'll take my peanut head over the salami face any day)
✅ I sleep through the night.
✅ I’m not tired during the day anymore.
✅ I don’t scratch myself awake at 2 a.m. (Unless I eat sugar the wrong way... I’ll explain in a second.)
Now, I’m not telling you to cut sugar out completely.
But I am telling you to learn how to control it.
And when I say “sugar,” I mean 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐬. Let me break it down:
2 kinds of carbs:
Simple carbs = fast sugar = white rice, white bread, sweets, most snacks, even fruit (although fruit is its own category).
Complex carbs = slower, better energy = veggies, lentils, black rice, quinoa, oats, sweet potatoes, nuts.
What changed everything for me was this simple rule:
Eat more complex carbs. Fewer simple ones.
Here’s what I eat now:
Black rice sushi
Lentil pizza
Lentil curry with quinoa
Sweet potato + avocado wraps
Broccoli soup
Zucchini-feta patties
Oat bread
Overnight oats
Then — after the good stuff — I’ll enjoy:
Oreo cheesecake
Banana ice cream (with nutella & peanut butter of course!!)
Dates
Vegan Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough (those cookie bits are amazing!!)
A bit of fruit
So instead of eating white rice → then fruit → then ice cream...
I flip it.
I eat complex carbs first, simple carbs second.
This changed my life.
It changed how I feel.
It changed how I look.
It changed how I see sugar.
Maybe it’ll help you too.
Give it a shot.
